1.5M Brazilian ST&I CVs, 10-year exponential growth

According to the cartogram app in the Brazilian Innovation Portal, the number of CVs on science, technology, and innovation (ST&I) in the national information and knowledge platform, Plataforma Lattes, reached 1.5 million yesterday, April 13. The achievement is consistent with the quadratic (exponential) growth of the total number of CVs for almost 10 years.

The landmark of Plataforma Lattes’ launch was the release, in August 16, 1999, of the Lattes Curriculum System - the best known artifact among the 140 delivered by the research team of Instituto Stela to CNPq (the Brazilian national research council) in the course of the project from 1998 to 2004. The Platform was born that day with about 35 thousand CVs imported from previous, incompatible electronic CVs. This information integration, though innovative, was only a consequence of Plataforma Lattes’ distinguished feature: its conception under a systemic view of a sociotechnological information and knowledge platform for the management of ST&I.

Plataforma Lattes is frequently and mistakenly pictured as “a database” or an “informatics” project. Informatics can realize technology, but comes short of resources to conceive sociotechnological systems. The web is crowded with sociotechnological phenomenal successes such as Google, Wikipedia, YouTube, EBay, Orkut, Twitter… and the web itself. E-gov initiatives are not usually there, but Plataforma Lattes, with its 10-year quadratic growth, may very well qualify.
